Barrett’s oesophagus is characterised by an abnormal change in the cells of lower part of oesophagus, with the replacement of the normal stratified squamous epithelium lining of the oesophagus by simple columnar epithelium with goblet cells. These cells are commonly found in the lower gastrointestinal tract. It is usually diagnosed in people with long-term gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
